What is the best remedy for a thrown out back?!

Question: My gf threw her back out Saturday morning when she tried to pick up her hair dryer. She is only 23. What could have caused this? She is having some bad pains in her lower back. Sharp, stabbing, and throbbing a little. It hurts when she is sitting. That morning, she could not even walk without my help. PLEASE HELP!

Your gf should see a doctor to rule out anything more serious. For a strained back, rest, ice and anti-inflammatories (like ibuprofin) is generally best. Sitting actually puts quite a bit of strain on the lumbar spine. Laying flat is best.

I saw physical therapy for a little while after throwing my back out once.

Any doctor will tell you the same thing: most back injuries heal themselves with rest and time. A heating pad will help relieve spasms, but it shouldn't be left on more than 20 or 30 mins at a time. Muscle relaxants will help too, but any that are worthwhile are available only by perscription.

Fact:
80% of back pain goes away NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO TO IT.

meds, docs, therapy, they don't change the stats.

Unless she is in agony even with OTC meds, I'd save the cash and wait at least a week.

Good luck!

Ten days of bed rest....even in acupuncture it's 10 treatments. Usually chiropractors are leery of adjustments, however if she has been to one, tell her to call. Other than that, you have been given some good advice. Treat her like a queen and she will recover much quicker.

Well if a steaming hot bath with Epsom salts doesnt cure it then report to a doc immediatly

she should see a chiropractor. you do not want to let back pain go or put it off because it can get worse and you don't want her to end up needing surgery. so make sure she sees someone for it.
