There are basically two types of nosebleeds, anterior and posterior. They are named like that because of the different circulation in the nose that are affected. Most of the time ( i would say about 95%) are anterior bleeds. Posterior bleeds are a bit more worrisome because of the potential of the blood blocking airway because if it bleeds too much people can aspirate (it goes to the trachea/lungs, or "the wrong tube").
You should hold pressure at the bridge of the nose for at least 10 minutes.....BUT NOOOOOO PEAKING OR CHANGING ONE HAND TO ANOTHER....that is you HAVE to hold pressure without moving for ten minutes straight and head positioned tilted forward. This resolves most bleeds. But again....only if apply pressure nonstop for the whole ten minutes.
If this doesnt work, you need to go to the ER where they can use silver nitrite sticks to cauterize (kind of like burning the vessel so it can stop bleeding) which is virtually painless. Otherwise they might do something called "packing" where they put something that looks like a balloon or a tampon in the nosetril to stop the bleeding. Antibiotics will be given to prevent infection if packing is done and your father will need to be seen by an EarNoseThroat doctor.
Since you didnt mention what medications your father is on, it might be that he is on a blood thinner, which makes the situation even more serious. If you have ANY DOUBTS you should just go to the ER.....

Regular nosebleeds can occur from lack of vitamin K. Eating raw peanuts can fix this. Nasal spray can work.

You need to call 911 and go to the ER. Make sure you bring any/all meds. that your father is currently taking & note which vitimins/herbal supplements he is also taking. Try to find out what he ate/did during the day. You don't say how old you are, but if you are young...call 911 and be sure to give your father's full name, your address,and your town. Give your phone number and do not get off the phone until the operator tells you it is OK. Put on your outside porch lights and have the front door open. Have your father sit down and keep as still as possible. DO NOT TILT his head back...Keep pressure on both sides of his nose and have him breathe through his mouth. If someone else is in the house with you(and they are old enough) have them stay with your Dad and you make the call. Hope all turns out well. Guard Dog
