Is 800 mg of motrin safe to double?!

Question: I just took some prescribed medication for cramps (800 mg motrin) is it safe to take another dose since the pain didnt go away? I told my Dr about my painful period cramps and how sometimes they are so bad they have me bent forward cause it even hurts to walk normal and strait. This is what he gave me but It isnt working!!!

800mg is the maximum single dose that you can take at a single time, and you cannot exceed more than 3200mg/day. If you exceed these dosages you may intoxicate yourself. Symptoms of an ibuprofen overdose may include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, drowsiness, black or bloody stools, coughing up blood, shallow breathing, fainting, or coma.
Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine.
You may try to combine Ibuprofen at lower dosages with regular Tylenol, and that seems to work much better that either one on it's own.

800 mg should only be taken once every 6 hours, if 800 didnt work, 1600 isn't going to work either. 800 mg is the highest dose one can take safely every 6 hours.

I've done it. I wouldn't take 6.

you should not double your motrin. 800mg is the prescription dose and highest amount you should take at one time. Motrin also acts as a blood thinner so taking too much can cause you problems.

No probably not a good idea but I don't think it will kill you... usually people take about 400mg of motrin so taking 800 mg is already alot. I'm assuming your doctor made sure nothing is seriously wrong with that's causing those cramps before he just threw a prescription at you... right? If not you should go back!!

No it is not wise. It can also do liver damage and upset your tummy.

Sure...if you want to fry your liver! On a serious note, you should only be taking 800 MG every six hours at the earliest. If the ibuprofen is not curing your pain, try something else like a heating pad or warm bath. If this still isn't cutting it then you need to talk to your doctor about getting something stronger.

I agree with the other posters -- 800mg is the highest dose you should take at any one time.

Try a heating pad or a hot bath - helps ease the muscles.

Also, you can try tucking your knees under you and laying face down -- the position relaxes the muscles.
