What are the colored plastic strips above a doctors examining room for?!

Question: You know, when you follow the nurse into a room, she flips one out above the door?

Probably some sort of code to let them know that the patient is ready to be seen, has a contagious condition, whatever. I wouldn't be surprised if one of them meant "has crappy insurance" so that person gets seen last if there's any time left!

Seriously, I've always wondered that too. I've seen the plastic strips but never seen them in use. Maybe it's some sort of secret doctor-nurse code - red means "meet me for a drink after work", blue means "my wife will be home tonight"...who knows.

it shows if someones in that room im pretty sureeee.

to show who is next, or they will flip a card if the doctor is already in there, or to show if they have already been looked at

There are various colors and they have different meanings in different offices. They can mean that a patient is in the room waiting to be seen, that the room is empty and available, that the room needs cleaning, that the doctor needs help, any number of things.

They indicated what's going on in the room such as the doctor is in there, patient is waiting, nurse needs to do something. I don't know if all offices use the same code colors or not.

In the office i work in each doctor is assigned a color and everything is color coded to that doctor
