When it's cold outside, your blood vessels constrict (close up slightly) especially in your extremities like your hands and feet. This stops so much blood flowing near the surface of the skin, and prevents you losing body heat. Of course, it also reduces the amount of blood flowing through, so your hands and feet will go pale and feel colder, and maybe become numb. It can be made worse if your circulation is poor to begin with.

In extreme cases, you can suffer from something called Raynaud's Syndrome. This is where the blood vessels constrict much more than they need to when exposed to cold temperatures or emotional stress, and massively reduce the amount of blood flowing through them. This leads to hands and feet quickly turning numb, cold and white or even blue. The majority of cases are diagnosed in women aged 15-40, and are not caused by any underlying medical condition.

You can take a few basic steps which may help. If you smoke, stop - nicotine causes a drop in skin temperature, making things worse. Take regular exercise to keep your circulatory system healthy (always good advice anyway), and wrap up when going out in the cold. Mittens are better than gloves as your fingers stay close to each other, conserving heat.

this can happen if you have ever had frostbite in your fingers. i get that in my little toes. it very bothersome.
keep your hands warm in your mittens. that will help.

I get weird hands in the cold aswell except mine go bright blue with orangey/red spots. I went to the doctor and aparently it is because i smoke and it causes bad blood circulation that is all i know though!!
