Do we yawn because we are tired?!

Question: Is it because we are tired or is that just a myth?
I also heard its so we can breath in more (which sounds more believeable)
People usually say "im tired" after yawning or go to bed not long after a yawn, it could have something to do with tiredness but can anyone confirm this?

Why do we yawn ? There are three main theories :

1) Physiological theory- A yawn is a semi-automatic reflex that originates in the brain stem in response to a lower level of oxygen in the brain. So by yawning - opening our mouths wide and taking in bigger breaths of air -serves as a way to gather more oxygen into the system." This low oxygen level theory is discounted because fetuses in utero were found to be yawning and they do not have ventilated lungs as yet.

2) The boredom theory: Yawning also occurs when a person loses interest in their surroundings, i.e gets bored.

3) The evolution theory: Another reason is that yawning maybe a way of communicating and coordinating social or synchronizing behavior between animals. That's why yawning can become contagious.

Under this theory, also yawning can occur not only when transitioning from a state of alertness to a state of sleepiness, but also from a transition from sleepiness to alertness.

Thus you yawn not only because you're tired before going to bed; , but also you yawn when you wake up in the morning. Further, I have been surprised to find myself yawning on numerous occasions because I was not feeling any hint of being sleepy, but perhaps it occurred at moments when something was happening for which I needed to be more alert than normal, and my body therefore responded with a yawn.

When you are sleepy, bored or tired, you breathe more slowly. Your body requires oxygen and needs to throw out the carbon dioxide. So, your brain makes you take an extra breath, which is deep and long called a yawn, so that you can take in more of oxygen and give out carbon dioxide fully.

Now, next time, if your teacher asks you, "why are you yawning?", you can say that her class is boring and your body needs oxygen for which your brain has sent a message to your lungs to take an extra deep breath called the yawn.

The latest theory is that yawning is a way of cooling the brain.

Most people believe that it is because when we are tired or bored, our breathing becomes shallower and therefore we do not get as much oxygen as we need. A yawn causes us to breathe deeply and inhale a lot more oxygen.

It either means you are tired or bored, a yawn is when you're body is slowing down (tired) and is trying to boost it's oxygen levels so it can work better.

Yes you are right somewhat ... In a recent research it was discovered that ... we yawn when our brain gets overheated and to cool it down our brain triggers yawning ....
