My daughter snores really badly?!

Question: My 14 year old daughter snores so bad at night and sometimes she sounds like she is gasping for breath and I wake her to make her move onto her right side, which helps a little bit,but it scares me so much that I cannot sleep if I do not hear her at night, I am awake most of the night worrying about it. She had a sleep study done, but that night she did not snore, so they found nothing, but she still snores really bad and as soon as she falls asleep she is snoring. It is only getting worse and she is embarrassed to stay the night anywhere casue she gets really loud and it looks like her throat and neck are caving in so hard while she is trying to breathe. Its like she is gasping for breath and her lips get really dried out and white, and her mouth is usually opened all night so much so that her throat hurts every morning and she cant talk for about 10 minutes or so after waking, due to the dryness. The docs said she may need her tonsils out. She used breathrights,do not work at all for her.

I recall when I was a young girl, my little brother, age 9, snored severely. Mom took him to the doctor and his tonsils *and* adenoids were severely enlarged. The doc scheduled him for removal of tonsils and adenoids, and his snoring stopped completely after the surgery.

If your daughter had a sleep study done and didn't snore, perhaps it's something in your home or in her room that's causing the problem. Is the air in her room to dry? Try a humidifier. She could be allergic to dust mites, pet dander, something that may be in your house that was not in the sleep study clinic.

I'd get a 2nd opinion tho, before going thru with the tonsillectomy. A doctor can run tests to see if she's allergic to various substances.

That's not right. This only happen to older adults in life. I would highly recommend that you take her to your Doctor and discuss this issue.

If she is overweight, have her lose the extra weight. That has a big effect on snoring.

I can't believe that the sleep study didn't show anything. The gasping for breath is a classic symptom of sleep apnea. Get her back to the doctor. Maybe you could set up a video camera and capture what you are describing to show the doctors. Most of them have infrared capabilities. Perhaps it is tonsils, but she needs relief.
