Ibuprofen can help with the pain relief. Also tell him to ice it (if it just happened). If not, tell him to try a hot bath with a soak (like epsom salt) and to massage the painful area a few times a day. He also needs to stretch the muscles in the area si it doesnt tighten up. Tell him its also very important to stretch BEFORE AND AFTER any exercise or else it can happen again. Good luck.
