I had my big toe nail removed just recently due to an ingrown toe nail. What it is, is, as you place pressure on your foot, your nail digs into the skin underneath it, and that causes swelling and pain.
If you want to temporarily relieve that pain, wear thongs when you walk, and rub the swollen area with antiseptic cream or Betadine to disinfect it and relieve pain.
Other than that, you really have to go to the doctor before it's too late. Extremely bad cases of ingrowns can turn into gangrene. Hope this helps.

I have the same problem. Soak it in hot water and epsom salt. Get the water as hot as you can stand it. Soak for 30 min. I usually do both feet cause it feels good.

Depending on how seriously ingrown it is, the doctor will either dig out the ingrown part, cut out a section of your nail, or remove the nail completely. I would suggest getting a type of numbing ointment such as Topicaine to help with the pain. You can also take Ibuprofen or something like Tylenol with Acetamenophen in it. What is happening is the nail is actually growing into the skin of your toe, this happens for many reasons such as trimming your toenails incorrectly, wearing tight shoes, or even stubbing your toe or getting your toe stepped on. But mainly what you need to do is soak your toe at least 3 times a day and be sure to keep the toe dry. But if the condition does worsen, you need to go to a doctor so that an infection does not occur. I hope this helps!!!
