What do you do when you find out you are lactose intolerant?!

Question: How do you deal with that change? Up until I had turned 27 I could eat anything with dairy in it. Not so much any more with out being sick.

My mom learned she was lactose intolerant in her early 30s and it was very hard for her to adjust to the diet. She cannot eat any dairy products and she absolutely loves cheese.

There are a lot of soy milks now that you can eat and we have just discovered that Dark Chocolate does not have milk in it! So, you can eat dark chocolate [and it is better for you anyway]. So I hope that is helpful.

There are some over the counter pills that you can take that help to lessen the effects of the dairy products or to delay the effects, but they don't completely stop them from happening.

well if you have been officially diagnosed - which u really shud be by a test if u plan to avoid all lactose, then you will need to avoid lactose in large amounts.

however, it depends on the individual - a lot of people with l i can tolerate small amounts at a time - a small piece of cheese, milk in bread and baked foods, a small piece of chocolate. fermented yofurts (like 'live' natural yogurts are often tolerated ok as the lactose has been mostly fermented.

some people cannot tolerate these trace amounts - if u are having severe reactions see a doc as you may have an actual milk allergy which is more sereve.
