Percocet or Oxycontin?!

Question: I have chronic pelvic pain and i'm prescribed to 7.5/300mg of Percocet every month. I'm now really starting to worry about my liver because each pill contains 300mgs of acetaminophen. I'm going to see my doctor tomorrow and I'm thinking about asking him to give me Oxycontin instead. Are there any kinds of painkillers that don't contain acetaminophen and is asking my doctor for Oxycontin way out of line?

Go for it! It's good for chronic pain, since it is long-acting. My pain dr gave it to me, but I was allergic :( I loved it until the reactions, tho. It's nice to only need to take 1-2 pills a day rather than 4-6. Long-term usage of a long-acting makes more sense, anyhow. And acetaminophen over time is hard on the kidneys (not to mention the liver): http://www.naturalnews.com/001523.html so you are justified in being concerned about it.
The percentage of chronic pain patients who get addicted to pain medicine is less than 1%, so don't be overly alarmed about what some think of Oxycontin. Oh, and withdrawal is *not* a sign of addiction. The modern definition of addiction is seeking out a drug for the high, not having physical side effects when the drug is discontinued. There's been tons of research the last few decades on this.

Unless you are taking a whole bunch of them you are ok. It's 4,000mg per day. The oxycodone works better for longer relief. 12 hours

300mg is no big deal. Over-the-counter Tylenol is 500mg per pill and the dosage instructions are to take 2 tablets every 4 to 6 hours. If you drink alcohol, have liver problems, or are going to be on this for the rest of your life then it would be fine to discuss your concerns with your doctor.

The generic name for Percocet is Oxycod.
Find out how close Oxycod is to Oxycontin.

As for the doctor... simply state your concerns toward your liver and Percocet. Let him decide the final outcome.

The active ingredient in Percocet is oxycodone, which is also available without the acetaminophen.

Talk to your doctor about either the oxycodone or the Oxycontin.

You are entitled, in fact you need, to ask your doctor any health related questions that you ever have.

As far as your liver concerned, it would seem to me that you identified the real problem with the word "worry". The liver can manage fine with short courses of medications as long as you drink as much water as you need (2 to 3 quarts a day).

Well my dear let me stop you right there! Oxycontin is the worst thing you could ever think about taking. I took Oxycontin because of severe leg pain. My pain management Dr. told me to take them. I took them as perscribed. I never abused them. I did not know how addicting they were. Even taking them as perscribed it was a problem for me because my body became addicted. I had to ween myself off of them. It was hell. My bones ached my body ached. It was awful. I would never recomend them to anyone. Please take my advice and stay far away from those things. You will regret it. Now I dont know anything about percocet. Please talk to your Dr. ask him if there is anything you can take that isnt addicting.

I am on Perocet! I sprained my ankle and the ankle I sprained I have a screw in because I fractured the bone but anyway, you need to be very very very careful with Perocet your body can get highly addicted to it and then when you don't take it you go through with drawl from it. I will tell you alittle story really quick. I was on Perocet after my ankle surgery and about a month after my surgery I just stopped taking it because i didn't need it anymore and I was taking it around 10pm every night and I didn't this night and i started shaking, going from cold to hot and hot to cold and I was getting dizzy and I couldn't figure out what was going on so my mother came in and she had no clue what was going on and I finally remembered I haven't had my Perocet my body was addicted to it. So, my advice to you don't COLD TURKEY it which means sudden;y stop it. Detoxic off of it. If your taking two tablets then take two for four days and then decrease to 1.5 for four days and so fourth. but, as far as asking your doctor for something else I would just explain your reasoning and your concern and then see what he/she says I mean what's the worst they can say is no.
GOOD LUCK
