Anyone got a cure for insomnia? I have an overactive mind and its wearing me out!

Trouble is the whole package of using sleeping pills is a myth. It takes as little as 3 days to become habituated. From that point on if you try and go without them you sleep less that you did initially. This convinces you that you can't sleep without them, which is true, but only because they have taught your brain to rely on them to switch off.

Overall patients on long term sleeping pills sleep on average only 20 minutes more than they did pre-medication and fall asleep only 12 minutes sooner. Not much of a gain to balanced against a life time time of addiction.

The trick is never to prescribe them in the first place, GPs with good pharmacological knowledge seldom do.

In 25 years of GP practice I have confined sleeping pill prescriptions to 3 patient groups.

1) The terminally ill
2) Patients with psychotic mental illness who require sedation as an adjunct to their other mediation
3) Elderly demented patients in nursing homes.

I have a similar thing, I get too anxious, and think about too many things and cant sleep, I was talking to my yoga teacher about it and she advised me to try something from a website called pzizz.com
Its a relaxation download, you can download a 15 min trial for your ipod and listen to it before you go to sleep, it worked for me and I normally cringe like crazy at relaxation downloads, this bloke is actually quite comical, dont think he means to be but he is, and the voice is quite soothing, it means you can focus on the words and the voice insted of your own thoughts and you then can find it easier to fall asleep.

Same I havent slept in three nights, I was even hallucinating I thought i seen snap crackle and pop in my microwave XD

I think you should just get some water and read a book until you feel drowsy.

Herbal tea and Classical music played very softly help me go right to sleep:-)

Hot drink, 2 paracetomols, and leave speech radio on. I drop off that way.

I heard the best thing to do is to get up half an hour earlier than you normally do to kick start your body. good luck. Valerian root is good but smelly!

Try watching England play cricket; it's so slow and if you nod off before it's finished then there's no problem, England will have lost anyway..

I suffer from this problem. My solution is to make sure I am warm in bed, take a series of deep breaths, think of nothing in particular - just concentrate on the breathing.

Also Radio 4 is a boon. If the breathing trick should fail I switch on the radio, which transfers automatically to World Service at 1 a.m., I have it on very softly and the sheer boredom of trying to concentrate soon sends me to sleep.
