You need to take a first aid/CPR class from your local red cross. Sometimes these are seperate classes for different age groups, so you will want to take a class for all the age groups you want to babysit. Normally if you take a babysitting class this is included. If you take it from the Red Cross you will be certified. They will teach you what to do in many situations, such as choking, burns, cuts, sprains, etc, in all situations. The CPR class is just that, it will teach you cpr on the different age groups, as it is not the same procedure on an infant or toddler as it is for an adult. I took these at 9 years old so that I could babysit...I wouldn't want someone who wasn't certified to watch my children, and since I live on a military base, I am required to have someone who is certified in both and registered as a babysitter on base. Yes, a first aid kit from a walgreens is sufficient if the people you are babysitting for don't already have one.

i'm pretty sure to be certified you have to take a class

for a cut rinse it and then put neosprin on it then put a bandage onit!
If it is a deeper cut, rinse it, the put peroxide on it!

Contact your local paramedics. When I worked at a hockey rink, paramedics taught us a class and gave us a test, thus certifying us.

Also, if you can't find anyone to give you a class, you can become certified online.

I realize that online may sound like the easier, and therefore "better" option, but please consider that you may actually find yourself in a situation where a child needs help. In that instance, you'd be more apt to know what to do if you take the actual class. I really advise you to take the class if at all possible.

Also, its nice to have a real person ask any questions you may have.

At your local library you can find classes for babysitting, maybe even your community center

call your local american red cross office. most of them offer a babysitting class that covers first aid/cpr for a small fee. i'm not sure why you wouldn't take a class that lasts a few hours. if you want to get a lot of babysitting jobs, make sure you get the skills first. as a mom it is very important that the person watching our kids knows basic first aid. good luck

You can get First Aid certified at your local Red Cross. Look online to see if there is one in your area. Also, sometimes YMCAs hold First Aid classes. You might also want to consider CPR which you can do in the same manner. These classes generally take 4-6 hours but are fairly easy. You must take a test at the end of the class to ensure that you know everything and were paying attention. First Aid mostly involves watching videos.

The Red Cross is the standard for first aid certification. In order to get a certification you HAVE to take a class. Make sure you get CPR training as well.

You do need training in First Aid and CPR, a book only tells you the theorys, you need to get the practical part of the training.

Good for you to get this training, more people need to step up and take this great course

Look in the community Ed classes for a CPR/First Aid class. It will be about a 8 Hr class. That should cover what you need to know and get you a certification card.
