It doesn't sound infected, but it is kind of hard for cuts to heal if they're in a "high traffic" area like your hands.

Put a bandage and some antibiotic ointment on it, and try to keep it dry.

I had an injury just like that! (and its still healing.)
My advice would be to put an antibiotic ointment on it (Neosporin for example) and put a band-aid over it. Also, it may help to splint it for a while so your finger can't bend and the cut doesn't reopen.
If it becomes infected, put some peroxide on a cottonball and dab it once a day. Then put on a new bandaid.
Good luck!

Even a little cut can get really serious if it doesn't close and stay closed. If it's getting infected it will get sorer and more tender, and redder in the skin around it. If it's sorer than it was before, that could be an infection.

You can just wrap it up, try to keep it clean, and hope for the best. I've done this before and it will probably work.

But if it doesn't get better in a couple of days I think I might see about getting it stitched up. This is a very minor thing, one or two stitches will close it right up. The doctor might decide to give you antibiotics too.

That sounds infected to me! You'll need to rewash it, and i do mean the inside of the wound sorry, then apply 'butterfly' stitches. They're paper sutures you can buy from your pharmacist but be careful, they are extremely strong so make sure your wound edges are perfectly straight or you'll end up with a raised scar when it heals. Put the stitches across the wound making sure both edges are together then apply a lint dressing. Take two extremely clean lolly sticks or tongue depressers and cut them to the size of your finger. Put one on the front and one on the back of your finger and wrap round with surgical tape. Next apply finger webbing ( you can buy this in a box with the webbing applicator inside, makes it easier! ) Make sure you end the webbing at the base of your finger so that you can put surgical tape around it to stop it unravelling. Leave it all in position ( you won't be able to use that finger or bend it but it needs to heal or your in trouble! ) for at least four days, then take it all off and have a look. If the wound is healing nicely, take off the 'sticks' but leave the stitches on then lightly dress it again to keep out the dirt - you can now start bending and using your finger but don't get it wet! After around seven days you can remove the stitches but don't over use your finger, no washing up for you ha ha, ain't you lucky! Seriously though, don't go back to using it as normal or you'll risk undoing all your hard work, just take things easy. If, when you open the dressing and its still purple in colour then please go to the hospital for tetanus shots and antibiotics but i think you'll get away with it, you've just not looked after it right. Best of luck to mate, hope it heals very soon, bloody sore that is!

In advance excuss the spelling. You should clean the wond well with soap, water, and some peroxide. Get some neosporin and a band-aid to make sure no more germs are interduced to the cut. P.S.- if you havn't had a technis shot that may be a good idea as well considering it was a metal can. (Botulism)
