Injuries to the growth plate are difficult to diagnose as these areas of the bone do not show up well on x-ray. The net result is that these fractures are often over-read (not really there) or under-read (really there but the x-ray is not helpful)

In many cases, this diagnosis is made on clinical grounds:
* Point tenderness
* Swelling overlying the growth plate site
* Continued pain

If many of your findings go away and your pain markedly decreases it is possible that the growth plate is fine. Talk to your doctor, let him or her re-examine your thumb and then go from there...

If your doctor x-rayed it & said its broken...then yes its broken. If you tell your doctor that it doesnt hurt that bad and you dont need a full cast they will probably listen.
