Knee pain =/?!

Question: so ive been playing volleyball year round for 6 years now and have had several different knee, back, and finger injuries. however they all end up going away after say 6 months or so. however ive been having on and off pain in my left knee for over 7 months, and it has just recently worsened. a landed straight on my knee cap a while back while diving for a ball and instantly my entire leg became completely numb, from my hip down to my calf, but it only lasted about 7 or 8 seconds. if i dont play on it for about a week it goes away for the most part, only hurting when it's bent and pressure is applied. so i dont worry about it too much. i end up diving on my knee a lot though to get balls up and since, every time it just goes numb after impact, and continues to hurt for several hours afterward. its really really been bothering me for the past two weeks. i dont really know what to do.. ive been wearing a brace and taking 800mg of advil before but thats all the doctor has done..any help?

It sounds like you have irritated the cartilage on the underneath side of the knee cap and the injury is being further irritated by a condition known as patellofemoral pain syndrome. This is somewhat common in teenage girls who play sports that require a lot of jumping or running. Its where the knee cap tracks slightly out of alignment due to weakness in the leg muscles. If you have not already done so then I would recommend that you see an orthopedic doctor to have the knee examined and then go through physical therapy. If you did see an orthopedic doctor then see a different one b/c 800mg of advil and a brace are not doing much for you.

Yea go back to your doctor and get them to check whether you have done cartlidge damage or if theres liquid that needs draining. I did the same when I played volleyball, I did a lot of swimming, weight training and bicycle work too strengthen my knee again.

Not to worry you, but you might want to get that checked out for serious damage. I doubt that it's a cartilage issue, but you never know.

You need an MRI of the knee and then orhopedic consultation. The injury is likely a torn knee ligament although it is difficult to make that diagnosis on the computer with limited information and no exam. It is important that the above gets done as this is not a simple sprain naymore given its duration. Need to lay off sports until seen by Orthopedics although usual activities should continue.
