Brand new tongue piercing PROBLEMS?!

Question: My friend just got her tongue pierced on Wednesday and her tongue is all hard and lumpy .. now I know it's normal for her tongue to be a little screwed up for a while cause it's trauma to the body or whatever, but she also said that the area behind her chin underneath her tongue is swollen and painful and she's worried that they hit a nerve or something .. what could this be? Ive never had my tongue pierced before so idk .. Any ideas?

If you mean her whole tongue is still swollen or lumpy then she needs to see her doctor as soon as possible. All over swelling or other odd symptoms so long after piercing is not usual. DO NOT REMOVE THE PIERCING until she has had a doctor's adivce. Taking the jewelry out can stop the area from draining if it is infected and cause more problems.

If you mean that the area right around her piercing is still hard and feels like a lump, but otherwise the area looks normal, then she's probably fine. The area right around the jewelry is going to still be a little puffy because it is drawing blood flow to the area in order to heal itself. If the area is red, producing odd colored discharge, is hot, or is really painful then she still needs to see her piercer or a doctor.

The area under her tongue may just be aggravated from the pressure of her jewelry. When a person rests their jewelry on the same spot, it may get irritated. This problem is going to be made a little worse right now because she has an extra long barbell in place to accomodate swelling. If the pain she is haveing seems like it could be caused just by the rubbing of her jewelry, it will likely go away soon. If it feels like something else, have her see her piercer and let them check the area out.

One of the rules of piercing aftercare is to Always see your piercer when you have an issue. They will be able to tell her if she is healing as usual or if something else needs to be done.

tell her to take the dang thing out. a hunk of metal in your mouth isnt worth all the worrying if she's having problems with it. i had mine done and never had any pain really.

it can be a number of things but it sounds like its infected so just to be safe go to a doctors, i feel anything that's connected to the sinus or brain area is serious or can turn serious

Take it out right away and see a doctor. That sounds seriously dangerous. You shouldn't mess with things like that, it could really screw up the nerves in her tongue and under-chin (crucial to breathing, chewing and swallowing). I hope she'll be alright. Good luck!

I agree with GOAT HEAD!!! "Take the dang thing out!"

I would also like to add this... and forget about tongue piercing! It is unattractive, unsexy, and trashy looking... IMHO...

On top of that, it can damage your teeth, and teeth do NOT grow back! My son did the tongue piercing thing and took it out finally because his teeth were being chipped.

What's with the tongue piercing thing anyway?? We are not a tribe of primitives!

That happened to someone I know, she had to have part of her tongue removed, now she can't talk!
