Why did the bump on her head get darker after a week?!

Question: My child got a very bad bump on her head a week ago. It stuck out about a half inch when it first happened. It had just a bit of discoloring but this morning it got a lot darker. What is going on?! I the pediatricians office is closed for another half hour, so in the meantime, maybe you all can help?

Bruising takes place on every level of the wound of the skin and flesh. Blood which was leaked from damaged capillaries and vessels during the injury are different distances from the surface of the skin. It takes time for the blood to dissapate and be re-sorbed into the system. During this time, blood can rise to the surface and then show the different colors of typical brusing. New blood in a bruise also will show up as turquoise or blue, then old blood turns purple, black and eventually down the time line, green and yellow as it heals. Hope this helps!

One more bit of info for next time, and assureance this time, a bump is a very good thing. When you have a startlingly bad blow, from an object or fall, and NO bump, that is very bad. Usually, when the swelling is outside the head, that is bleeding in the flesh and skin. When there is no bump that can indicate bleeding inside the skull, which can be very serious, indeed. Medical care should be sought immediately. Assessment is always the key. Watching to keep child awake, is a precaution for concussion. Also, a very drowsy child that cannot be roused is indication that it could be more serious and they should be seen by medical Dr. immediately to determine extent of injury.

Anytime there is a wound that you know will lead to bruising, ice pack immediately. 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off, for a time, up to a couple hours. Never apply directly to skin as this can damage, use a wash cloth or small towel as a buffer. This helps the vessels and capillaries to seal off and begin to clot, prevent more bleeding and swelling, which is painfull.

Hello,
Head injurys are nothing to take lightly.
A little surprised you waited a week, but can understand many people do not no much about head inurys.
Get her in to be seen, very few doctors here on the computer and if there were true doctors here they can not see your kid.
I am sure you kept a eye on her sleeping, eating, mood since this happened?
Wish her and you well!
