You are looking at the wrong side of the eardrum! It is likely that the problem is due to fluid on the inner aspect of the ear canal, beneath the drum, so ear drops will do nothing at all. A simple decongestant and steam inhalation may help.

Hold your nose and blow this might relieve it

Just relax, it will sort itself out. You've got a cold and this has blocked the tube that goes to the back of your ear. Once the congestion clears, your ear will go back to normal.

You might be able to speed things by using a nasal rinse. (Yes I know it's your ear that hurts, but the problem's at the other end). They sell a kit in larger branches of Boots.

I always take sudafed when I fly to prevent that from happening because I have always has sinus and ear problems. Take a 12 hour non-drying sudafed and put a heating pad on your ear. Sleep on the opposite side, or it will get worse. Chewing gum helps your ears drain.
