What type of doctor should I see for a physical?!

Question: I am 30 years old and recently received Health Insurance, after not having it for 6 years. My questions is what type of doctor should I see for a full physical? Not one who is going to have me in and out of his office in 20 minutes.

Hi. The other answer is good but i would like to add that you may need to see a couple of Dr's. If you are a female i would suggest seeing a OB/GYN for a full physical as 6 years is too long to go without one. A eye Dr to check your eyes where as in a family Dr's office you will just read the chart hanging on a door. Also is there anything that has been going on with you that you feel needs to be checked? If so start at the family Dr or nurse practitioner and they will send you where you need to go. Sometimes we have to take our own health into our hands and make appointments to the other Dr's to feel we have had a complete whole body exam. Ask for blood work to be done since it has been so long since it has been done if ever, that is a great way to see if things are right there. Thyroid, Diabetes, Cholesterol, etc. They can check to see if your white and red blood count is good. I would definitely ask for those. Good luck and you are very lucky that you did not need insurance before but you are still young. One way to get what you want is don't let them rush you and tell them your not leaving without what you came for. Stand up for yourself as no one else will.

Look into what family and friends recommend - typically health care providers who are good have a GOOD reputation! If you are looking completely on your own, look into the possibility of a physician assistant. They are just as capable as a physician to perform a full physical and they tend to spend more time with their patients. They are trained to spend more than the 15 minutes doctors typically do. Also, feel free to tell them that you really wish to have a full physical. I'm sure they would be more than happy to help. Good luck!
