People (usually adults) don't tolerate lacose because they stop producing sufficient quantities of the enzyme required for digesting lactose, a sugar found in cow milk. This enzyme is called lactase. Lactose intolerance usually developes as one ages, mostly in those who have a european (fair skinned) genetic background.

The special milks you see at the store are of different types. "Lactaid" is cow milk that has had the enzyme lactase mixed into it, so the lactose sugars have already been broken down. "Silk" is a soy product that isn't actually milk. Goat milk has no lactose in it and can be drank straight, though some don't like it's richness or flavor.

Lactaid.com has some good information on lactose intolerance.

BTW: just because you are lactose intolerant does NOT mean you are allergic to milk. A true allergy produces specific symptoms such as itchiness, rash, and/or restriction of the airway.

Because their allergic to it. You can be allergic to many different things.

The lactose free milk is just that, lactose free. They remove the item that people are allergic too. Soya milk is made from soya, it's totally different then lactose free milk. I drink the lactose free milk, hate the soya milk.

i don't know

Cows milk is for calves.
People are the only mammals that feed their young, milk from another animal. Breast milk contains everything that a child needs. An animal's milk is not meant to be consumed by people.
Soya milk is just that. Read the label of the milk to see what it contains.

Some people like myself can not tolerate a lot lactose any longer (bummer). But there are plenty of alternatives if you wish to reduce your lactose intake.

1. Lactaid milk (lactose free dairy milk), perfect for recipes that require milk.
2. soy/rice/almond cheese (generally can be found in the vegetarian section of grocery store). Not great but fine on a sandwich.
3. Silk (vanilla flavored soy milk, good on cereal)
4. Soy icecream and soy icecream sandwiches.

Note on the cheeses, the only one I could find that seems to melt like real cheese is the almond cheese.

You can try lactose pills but they do not work for everyone all the time, I do not take them anymore.

It's not necessarily an allergy. Lactose intolerance is simply the inability to digest dairy. You (and I) are lacking enzymes in your digestive track that break down lactose in order to digest it properly. You can buy these enzymes at drug stores. And the "special" milk you are talking about can be, soy milk, goats milk, & lactose free milk. It's not something they put in, it's what they took out that allows you to drink it. Although, I don't recommend goats milk... yuck.

It is up to personal interest. For me, I will not take this choice.
