There is other ways to treat before you go to surgery. the first thing to do is get a splint/brace and have the wrist kept in neutral position. You can get one at super stores in the home remedies section. have him rest the hand. if he does typing he needs to protect his median nerve and if possible wear a splint during this activity. If he can see an Occupational Therapist that specializes in Hand Therapy they can determine the extent of the damage and offer strategies to correct the problem without surgery.
Anti-inflammatory, such as ibuprofen. if this does not help then he will have to have surgery. It is called carpal tunnel release. I had it done on both hands and it is not a bad surgery, I was probably in the surgery room for about 15 min. Just what every he does, DO NOT let them do both hands at the same time, because if that happens, then someone (YOU) will have to wipe his rear, and I do not know of anyone who wants to do that.
