How do people go through medical procedures alone?!

Question: I drove someone to and from a colonoscopy the other day, and it got me thinking about people who don't have relatives or close friends around. What do these people do after a medical procedure like a colonoscopy that prevents them from driving afterwards? Do they call a cab home? Are there services or RNs that assist people who don't have immediate help nearby? What options do they have available to them?

If someone wouldn't be safe staying home alone after a procedure and they won't or can't stay as an inpatient, I've referred people to temporary companion help services. They are primarily used for elderly people who still live alone, but need someone around for help and safety.

For getting home, there are handicap vans that offer transportation, or sometimes the hospital will foot the bill for a taxicab.

if they have no one to stay with them at all some keep them in the hosptial a day or so
others use a transportaion service
however they arent suppose to leave with out someone staying with them
