Jaw pain and pregnancy?!

Question: I know that pregnancy can make your joints soften, so I am wondering if it is normal for pregnant women to have jaw pain? Mine started yesterday, in my left jaw. It lasted for a few hours yesterday, until I took a nap, and when I woke up the pain was gone. Then a few hours later, it started up again. Sleeping seems to help it go away, though. So I am assuming it is just tight muscles? I've never had any problems with my teeth or jaws, and I've had my wisdom teeth removed (a few years back), so I know it can't be that. Any input? Is this normal? Has anyone else dealt with this?

Interesting question!!
I am 21 weeks pregnant and having terrible jaw pain, but I had developed a inflamed joint (called TMJ syndrome) a few months before I got pregnant.
However, since I got pregnant the pain has been much worse and bothers me a lot more...the only reason I can think of is that I am subconsciously tensing my facial and jaw muscles...maybe because of feeling gross so often and for such a long time (I had terrible morning sickness and still get tired and nauseous often). Anyways, I totally know how you feel! It's terrible to be in pain on top of all the regular discomforts of pregnancy. But worth it in the end, right?
Good luck...and try extra strength Tylenol! (taken moderately, of course. :)
Oh yeah, and massaging the joint and muscles and then drinking a glass of water can help a lot, too.

I'm not pregnant yet. Don't worry, it'll go away.

try wearing a night guard/mouth splint..

a doctor can give you one if you need a custom fit. You may be clenching your teeth w/o realizing it.

I'm sorry you've gotten all these ignorant answers!..I've never heard of having jaw pain from being pregnant, I really highly doubt pregnancy is the cause..maybe if it doesn't go away go to the doctor..he'll deff. know the answer :) good luck!

I wish I could help but through my pregnancy, I actually already had t.m.j. which is a dislocation of the jaw. I have always had bad pains in my jaw... but since tylenol is really the only thing you can take, try some tylenol? make sure you're not grinding your teeth or clenching a lot, i do that when Im stressed and it makes my jaw worse and being pregnant can be stressful at times, i know! I wish I had a better answer for you, but good luck... hope you feel better soon!

You may be feeling some extra stress ...I've had Jaw muscle pain at times in my life. They Call it TMJ . It sounds like you are managing your stress by sleeping which is good. Sleep is good for you. Also maybe if you find someone to talk to about your pregnancy and any other worries or concerns you have in life it will help to alleviate your stress and figure out what is going on inside you. I'm sure your baby is fine and living and growing stress free in there!

Congratulations! xoxox.

god this brings back memories! I too had this pain during all my pregnancies and often my jaw locked when I yawned, or eating steak etc.

During pregnancy and breastfeeding hormones make your ligaments softer and therefore joints are less stable including your jaw. I also grinded my teeth during pregnancy which added to the problem.

Also (sorry if TMI) - don't perform oral sex.
