How can I stop smoking?!

Question: I really want to quit. Been smoking since I was 14, I'm 31 now. I smoke alot, like a pack or more a day. I hate it. Any good suggestions or advice on quitting?

When I quit I'd been smoking for 8 years. I went to the health food store and got something called "nicotene relief" - it has natural plant in it that makes your brain react the same way it does to nicotene but it's not addictive. Take those as directed, and that will help you have the will power. Don't buy any ciggarettes at all. when you feel a craving, close your eyes and slowly count as high as you have to until you think of something else - that means the craving is gone. I started at about 120, but by the end of the frst week was down to 20. and just DONT SMOKE - if you do, your body renews its need every time you smoke. making it through each craving one at a time is the only way.

well i was recently given chantix. i like it, been on it about a month. its a small pill and i think its effective. research it. i am down to 5 a day and soon will be smoke free!

Watch disguisting smoking videos like we do in Health Class. I'll try to find you one.

Smoking is horible. You can lose your voice box and such. It is disguisting.

For now, try gum or lolli pops. :)

put down the cig simple!

Just quit and don't make a big deal out of it.
Forget the nicotine substitutes - they're useless and most people who try this way don't quit.
If you really want to stop, you will.

It's hard to do, but I've done it by just going cold turkey. You need to have other things to keep you busy. Boredom is your worst enemy. Constantly sip water, chew gum and eat hard candy. It does help. some times you'll just have to grit your teeth and get through the cravings. Good luck. It's not easy but it's worth it. I haven't smoked in nearly a month and I am breathing better already.

Quick cold turkey. Stay away from anything with caffene and ask God to help you. He will. Caffene is a stimulant that stirs your desire for a ciggarettes. I'll be praying for you.

i used the patch and it worked for me, i quit 7-8 years ago. just be prepared, you can brake your addiction down to a few different catigories.
1) the chemical that should be replaced short term.
2) the activity: actully doing something in a patern regularly, stepping outside and lighting up. i was working in a shop, so i started cleaning ALL DAY LONG. this really replaced the habit for me.

Courage and stop it !!

Today is actually my first day smoke free. (I'm use to smoking a pack a day). I'm currently using the patch.

I can't say that it's easy. This is probably my 100th time trying to quit (they were all cold turkey quits). The patch has made this time around a little bit better than before.

So, my advice to you is to use some form of aid, either the patch, gum, or there's pill your doc can prescribe. Secondly, don't think of it as long term. That's a lot of pressure. When you try quitting, tell yourself "I'm not going to smoke today." Then the next day, tell yourself the same thing, and the next, and so on. Take it one day at a time. Third, write down all of the reasons why you want to quit. Copy these reasons down on dozens of papers and post them on a wall in every room of your house. That way, you'll always be reminded of why you want to be smoke free.

Best of luck to you!
