Shot of cortisone for bursitis.... please answer if you know anything about cort!

Question: I vivited the Dr today for the pain Im having in my hips. It seems to get worse when I sit too long, or especially when laying in bed or on my sides. He thought I had bursitis. He said if it doesn't go away I can come back and he will give me a shot of cortisone to help the pain. I have never had this shot before, and i don't really know much about it. Is it a steroid? What side affects will I have? Will it make me gain weight or bulk up or grow unwanted facial hair or anything like that? Thanks for your input.

Bursitis is the inflammation of the bursa which is a small, fluid-filled sac in the joint. This sac provides lubrication to the joint to help keep it working properly. The inflammation is usually caused by over use or pressure on the joint. The common form of relief is a cortisone injection. The most common side effect of the cortisone injection is a burning feeling during the injection. Cortisone does not work for everyone but does provide relief for most people. Cortisone is a steroid, but not the muscle-bulking, weight-gain, hair-growing kind. If you are having serious doubts about receiving the injection, talk to your doctor about trying an anti-inflammatory oral medication (like ibuprofen or naproxen). These meds can provide relief but take longer to work than the injection.

hmm i dont know what bursitis is but i used to take corisone shots for allergies. they didnt have any nast side effects for me but everyone is different. i took a shot every three weeks and it worked really well for that. yes i do beleive it is a type of steriod but i could be wrong. you should discuss your concerns with your dr

I have had two shots of cortisone into the bursa in my shoulder. Neither helped, because the bursa wasn't the problem. In my case, my shoulders hurt because the bone had grown little spurs that were pinching the nerves.

The shots burned like fire when they were administered, but the discomfort didn't last too long. Neither gave me any relief. I had no long term side effects, like hair or weight gain. The doctor did say that he didn't want to try a third time because it was a steroid.

I also had steroids administered after I had surgery on my abdomen many years ago. I felt better while I was getting the shots, and when I was released from the hospital, they wore off. I had healed during that period of time, but my energy level went way down in the first few days after I stopped the shots.

The bursitis shots were not the same at all. The intent was to help the bursa heal and reduce inflammation. I had no positive outcome but I had no side effects, either.

Has your doctor suggested you try NSAIDS first, to help with the inflammation? If you can tolerate them, that would be your first course of action. Also, can you do some mild exercises to get your hips more limber? Make sure you don't sit for long periods; get up and gently stretch those ligaments and joints so the pain doesn't get unbearable.
Have you tried some heat at night, or some heat and very gentle stretching before you get out of bed in the morning?
The cortisone shots are steroids, which won't affect you in the same way oral or centrally administered steroids do. However, it would be in your best interest to do some surfing online and try some other treatments before you go the injection route. Good luck!
