Can i be put on a permanent "narcotic" pain reliever?!

Question: i had back surger 3 yrs. ago . it helped. but now my left leg has no feeling, and my rgt. leg always feels like there is cold water dripping on it. i WILL NOT go for back surgery again, and there still is some ciatic pain. percocet dont work(unless its by the hand ful, and washed down with alcohol)..oxycontin just is too expensive and to be honest dont work that well. can and would a dr. prescribe a full time pain killer

CHronic narcotic management is an option for some patients, when no other methods are effective. However, you are reporting primarily neuropathic pain symptoms, which are poorly controlled with narcotics. You need to see a specialist in chronic pain management. There are many neuromodulating substances which are non-narcotic and control neuropathic pain. ANother option would be a dorsal column stimulator where an electrical stimulation is sent through the affected area to control the pain transmission. If long term pain medications are considered, there are also methods for decreasing the adverse affects of oral narcotics in long term patients.

While I also understand you hesitance to consider additional spinal surgery; You should also remember that there are times when surgery is the only option available for patients.

I urge you to explore your pain control options, but you should also be ready for the possibility of the suggestion that your best option is surgical intervention. Most of the time the procedure is an option, other times it is required to maintain bowel and/or bladder control or to prevent loss of muscle control to the lower extremities.

I suggest you get a referral from your doctor to go to a pain clinic. That's the place that all aspects of your pain and all possible remedies are looked at. Many people are greatly helped by pain clinics. good luck

i've been on vicodin for over a year for a herniated disc in my back and chronic kidney stones. but according to my dr., i need to get off of it because the longer i'm on it, the more my body is building a tolerance to it, and the chance of addiction is becoming greater. i doubt that any dr. will permanenty put you on narcotics. have they tried any steriod treatments? good luck & hope it all works out for you.

you need neurontin for the nerve pain.narcs are not good for long term pain relief.i have the same problem with the sciatic nerve and bulging disc on my l4 and l5 lumbar.neurontin is a nerve blocker in the brain,it's used for epilepsy and now nerve pain.try going to a pain management doctor.hope this helps

I have had surgery x 4 on lower lumbar. Was on Morphine30 mg x 3 daily) and Neurontin 800 mg x2 daily. I did this for approx 5 years. I decided it was time to get off the meds and find alternative methods such as pain management clinics. What the dr's fail to let you in on is that not only does your body become physically addicted to this crap but many other life altering side affects as well. Personally my teeth started falling out and gained 100 lbs, which any one with back probs. will tell you is the last thing you need. Please think about this permanent plan of narcotics as pain management.
