Difference between percocet & vicodin....?!

Question: What is the difference between percocet and vicodin? I used to take vicodin (I have a condition in which I have chronic pain). Even after having surgery for another condition not long ago, I still have chronic pain - they narrowed it down to 1 - 2 things. I now take percocet, I do not take much of it (as I am not addicted to it by no means) I only take it when I have the severe pain episodes otherwise I stick to my depakote (which gives me stomach pains). The vicodin does not help with my severe pain, it does make me itchy. The percocet does not make me itchy and does help. I hate having to take pills at all, because before taking them I gag - i always feel like they stick in my throat. I just hate them period. Anyway, I have been told the 2 are very similar.

I have fibromyalgia, and am on both of these medications for pain. Percocet is oxycodone, and Vicodin is hydrocodone. Both are strong opiates, but Percocet is far stronger. And don't worry about the itching...it's a perfectly normal side effect from the Vicodin. I get itchy on my nose, ears, and face. The Percocet doesn't do that to me. Now, when I've actually taken the name-brand Vicodin, I haven't itched at all, but I itch with the generic something fierce. I have no explanation for that.

Just a different drug. Oxycodone in percocet and hydrocodone in vicodin. Oxycodone is generally considered the stronger of the two.

They're both opiates. Itching is a common reaction with opiates. Not an allergy.

they are very similar. the only differents between them is the dosage of the pills. It sounds that you kinda have a little allergic reaction to the vicodin. Nothing bad but you shouldnt be itching

Combine with promethazine (Phenergan) to cut out the itch and nausea. Phenergan will also make you sleepier.

The percocet works for better for pain. I have been in a pain management program for several years due to a spine injury and here are a few links to sites I use for pain. They will help

This one I highly recommend. It has helped me

If the itching doesn't go away you need to contact your doctor. Itching is a common, but sometimes serious symptom/side effect.

EDIT: They are both a controlled substance in the same class of medications.

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe to continue using OxyContin.

Side effects may include:
Constipation, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, headache, itching, nausea, sweating, vomiting, weakness
This side effects list is not complete. If you have any questions about side effects you should consult your doctor. Report any new or continuing symptoms to your doctor right away.

I've taken both of the medications for several years. The advantage to the percocet is oxycodone is a better pain medication for moderate pain. Plus the hydrocodone has tylenol in it which doesn't do your liver any favors. If you are saying "vicodin" they are usually 5/500 or 7.5/500( oxycodone). The percs are normally 10mg. and works far better than loratabs (10/500 hydrocodone)

ones a controlld substance (vicodin) ones a narcotic (percocet) therefore percocet is stronger my dad takes it also

Honestly i hate when people try to answet these questions when they really have no idea what they are talking about!!!! The differnce between is Percocet belongs in the Oxycodone family and Vicodin is Hydrocodone. Dosing is usually the same, i.e. 5/325, 5/500, 7.5/500 ect. Itching is a normal side effect of an opiad analgesic, however if it turns severe or you start having trouble breathing, you should get to an ER quickly!! Both of these drugs can cause severe respiratory problems.
