My jaw is very sore and tight....?!

Question: For the past couple of years I have been having trouble with my jaw it pops when I eat and every now and again (sometimes every other month sometimes every 3-4 months) it grows EXTREAMLY tight and hurts VERY bad. I haven't noticed any swelling at all, and My teeth don't hurt. In fact, sometimes it feels a little less painful when I chew on the sore side. But it can get VERY painful and lasts a week or so then slowly goes away for another few months. Oh, and it makes it very hard to open my mouth wide at all. Has anyone had anything like this before? and does anyone know what it could be?

Speaking from personal experience, you most likely have problems with your temporal mandibular joint (tmj). My gyuess is that you are gridning your teeth while you sleep and may not even notice it. I would go to the doctor as soon as possible so they can prescribe you muscle relaxers for at night to stop the grinding and they will fit you for a mouth gaurd (much like a retainer) to wear at night. For now, alternate with hot compresses and ice on the irritated area. Also, go on a VERY soft diet (no bagels, chewy meats, crunchy things) until the doctor gives you further instructions. make sure you take care if this now before it gets out of hand. good luck.

I don't really know what you did, but if it has hurt this bad for so long i would suggest going to see a doctor about it.

Go to your family doctor. But most likely, he will probably prescribe you Effexor. It is to relieve the symptoms of your pain and numb it.

Sounds like TMJ. http://www.tmj.org/basics.asp Make an appointment to be evaluated by a dentist or your primary healthcare provider. TMJ is treatable.
Effexor is an antidepressant and does not relieve physical pain symptoms.

Thats a sign of a heart attack.

I used to have a very similar problem, I went to the doctor and was given some exercises to do; within 2 weeks it had more or less cleared up - that was a year or so ago now and *touchwood*, it haven't had any problems since.
