Cat Scratch in my mouth?!

Question: So , I was sleeping this morning with my mouth open and my cat decided it would be a good idea to attatck my lip. Not sure why she did it but she scratched the inside of my lip and I am wondering if I should go to the doctor or what would be the treatment for the wound, i mean its small but i know that cat scratchs can get infected very easily and are very dirty, what should i do other than wash the wound with antibacterial soap.

If the scratch is in your mouth, you shouldn't wash your mouth out with soap! Ha ha, sorry you made me laugh!
You should however, use listerine, or salt water, and gargle. I probably wouldn't go to the dr. unless the wound is deep, requires stitches, or gets infected. There is also a product that you can buy over the counter that is called Glyoxide. You get it in the toothpaste isle. I used it when I got my tongue pierced, it keeps infections away! Its located by the dental floss.

My cat has attacked me many times in my sleep, but never my mouth.

From what I could find you might want to keep an eye on how you feel for about the next week or so an make sure that you don't develop Cat Scratch Disease. (See emedicine source.)

Other than that here are some general guidlines for mouth wounds:

______________________________________...

If the wound is on the lips or outside area of the mouth, wash it well with soap and water, but do not scrub the wound. Remove any dirt particles from the area and let the water from the faucet run over it for several minutes. A dirty cut or scrape that is not well cleaned can cause scarring.

Apply an antiseptic lotion or cream.

Use an ice pop or ice cube to suck on to help reduce bleeding and swelling.

Check the area each day and keep it clean and dry.

Avoid blowing on the wound, as this can cause germs to grow.

Use a sunscreen (sun protection factor, or SPF, at least 15 or greater) on healed cuts and wounds to help prevent scarring.

______________________________________...

If the wound is inside the mouth, rinse the area well with cool water for several minutes. Remove any dirt particles from the area.

Useand ice pop or ice cube to suck on to help reduce bleeding and swelling.

Check the area each day and keep it clean.

Even small lacerations of the lips may cause a noticeable difference in the border or outline of the lips. These wounds may require stitches to keep the borders even and reduce the possibility of scars.
