I think i might have stress fracture my hand??!

Question: See, my mom just hired my neighbor, who owns her own fitness center, to be my personal trainer.. and i think i might have stress fractured my left hand. ive been given a lot of planks, and other excersises that requires to put weight on my hands. on friday night i realized that my hand was hurting a lot, and after i looked at it i noticed a lot of ridged on the top of it that aren't on my right hand.

the ridges are going left to right..and there are like divets that are soft inbetween them.

i wanna wait a litte longer before i go to the doctor..becuase i dunno if i just pulled a muscle.. but does anyone have any comments about this?

First of all, you can't see a stress fracture so the "divets" you describe would not be the result of a stress fracture. A stress fracture is actually very small "micro fractures" that result from continual stress. They are most often found on shins or feet and are most common in runners from the repetitive motions of running.

I can't tell exactly what's wrong with your hand without looking, but I can tell you a few things to try. Ice your hand for 20 min several times a day (wait at least 45 min in between) and take ibuprofen (2 about every 4 hours...check the back of the bottle). Don't take tylenol. Ibuprofen will reduce some swelling and deal with pain. Refrain from exercises on your hand for awhile.

You should also talk to your personal trainer and tell him/her about the problems you are having with your hand. Your personal trainer also might be able to suggest some sort of brace to wear in the future.

You probably have a bruise, but its possible that there could be another problem. If ice, rest, and ibuprofen don't really help within the next several days, you need to go see a doctor to find out what exactly is wrong with your hand. Hope this helps and hope your hand feels better soon!
