My three year old daughter is prone to choke?!

Question: she had not done it for ages and then the other day she did it again. my mum was round and i done as i usually do and tipped her upside down and hit her (not too hard as to hurt her) on the back several times. it took ages for her to dislodge the food and she gave us all a huge fright. i was actually on the point of panicking when she was sick. i always try to make sure she chews properly before swallowing. am i doing the right thing in tipping her upside down. i have done my first aid but on kids it can be different.

Yes, turning her upside down is fine. You can always lay her across your knee with her head towards the floor if she gets too heavy.

Try to identify what type of food causes her problems. It might be wise to avoid stuff like grapes and apple - hard foods that can slide down and get stuck easily. Avoid foods like nuts as well.

Make sure that she's sitting down and not talking when she has her food - talking and moving around whilst eating makes choking more likely. Encourage her to take sips of water whilst eating as well.

I hope that it doesn't happen again as it must be very frightening.

Good Luck

I would cut her food up finely for her tehn get her checked she may have swollen glands in her throat. I believe the best way to dislodge blockages is to lay your child over your lap and hit her back!

But get her checked!

Chop her food up a bit more until she learns to use a knife or chew food appropriately.

Sounds like you did the right thing with the back slaps. You just have to remember to stay calm. Panic only increases your own lack of control in a situation in which your daughter will thank you for a steady nerve.

Well done!!

try cutting her food up even more than you already do and tell her not to swallow until she has chewed completely.Tipping her upside down seems like that's about the only option in her case, poor girl, and your right first aid on kids can be different, I wish I could give you a much better answer.
Anyways that would greatly give me a fright to.

Sorry but I am not sure about the first aid but have you tried cutting her food into very little pieces? Maybe you should also ask her doctor, let them be aware of what is happening. Also she might just be trying to eat fast, kids tend to do that. I am sure everything will be alright. Good luck!!

Yes you are doing it right. The only thing else there is, is to try and put one hand in the front, just under the sternum (chest bone). By doing that, you are pushing on the diaphragm and helping to expel more air. I know this is recommended for babies. A three year old may be too big to do this. But ideally, you want the child head down and one hand in front while you hit her on the back. Think of the hienleck maneuver. you know where you would put your fists to help an adult from choking?, that's where you want to put the heel of you hand while holding her upside down.

no do not tip her upside down.

take basic life support classes! IT could save your child's life one day!!

if your kid can breathe and talk or cough, then you do not need to do anything.

Cut up her food really small and encourage her to chew completely before putting in another piece. Never leave your child unattended while eating.

Cut her food VERY SMALL.

Teach her to chew every bite 12 times . Then it is much harder to choke.

LEARN THE HEIMLICK MANEUVER. That would be where you get behind her, put your arms around her just above her waist. Give a quick compression. It causes the air from the lungs and stomach to Blow the food out.

The upside down thing is not the right thing to do.

Don't turn her upside down as this will make her panic, up to three hard back slaps should move obstruction. If you don't do hard back slaps there isn't any point of doing it .Would you rather hurt her or lose her? I know which one I'd prefer.

make sure you cut her food into very small pieces. Has her doctor looked down her throat? Perhaps she needs to see an ENT doctor to make sure her esophagus is not obstructed or too small.

this is NOT normal. have her examined by the pediatrician and learn CPR.

Hi
What you did is fine, it worked! - if a person is small enough to be held upside down while back slaps are done then this is the first and preferred treatment for choking (or over your lap with their head low towards the floor)
second is the abdominal thrust or Heimlich maneuver

There is some world wide debate about the effectiveness of back slaps or blows - in the EU it is the treatment of choice - in the US the Heimlich. In the EU ANY patient that has had the Heimlich or abdominal thrust applied is required to go to hospital because of the high risk of internal damage (but better to have damage that can be repaired than not breath!!)
I have used back blows 100's of times with great effect, equally the Heimlich is effective too.

Long term matter...
It sounds like there may be an obstruction - get her seen - they will run a small camera down and look for restrictions - this is a common problem. In some cases it can also happen with food cut very small - you are doing all the right things - now seek medical aid.

NOTE for babies (under 12 months) the recommended treatment for choking is chest compressions like when you do CPR - in the middle of the breast bone - up to 5 of them

yes that is good what you are doing... but try giving your child smaller pieces of food

thats how i remember having done it. 3 back pats 3 chest thrusts look in the mouth and ventilate and ventilate. thats the little poem they taught us. but that is how i do it. and my daughter is almost 3. sounds right. kids usually choke on foods. i wouldnt worry sounds like your doing an excellent job...oh and PS my name is kerry-ann!!! cool huh!
