Answers: I mean periodically substituting something else.
Like smoking with chewing gum.

The only thing that will really help you quit smoking is to stop smoking long enough to let the nicotine get out of your system, and then tell yourself that from that point on it's all mental. If you're substituting something and telling yourself that it's a substitution, then you're still making time in your day for the habit. It would be better to fill the time with something totally different..for example, when you get the urge to go outside and smoke, play a computer game for the ten minutes you probably would have been smoking. Don't tell yourself that you're playing a game instead of smoking, just tell yourself that it's break time and that's how you're taking a break.

I'm trying to quit smoking and I chew gum but I've noticed, my hands need to be occupied, and if I hold a pen it helps a lot!

Hi
Exchanging one habit for another is what addiction calls Transference. However ti's not a bad thing to introduce a positive habit, If its smoking you have to let about 10 days to pass before you can settle away form the physical addiction. Allen Carr's Easy Way to stop smoking is a great reference to this process.
I did it and I don't smoke I eat and exercise but I am human and it tokk a couple of attempts.... success is in trying so I kept on

s.why not. i substitute watching movies for studying

Habits die hard. We want to kick habits because we find them bad for us.

Picking up another habit can help but the new habit should not be damaging as the earlier one. If the new habit is also damaging then it is like jumpimg from one frying pan to another.

Your inner strength and resolution to quit will ultimately decide whether you have kicked the bad habit. So be strong

Actually it is a mind set. I have this dilemma myself. First, you analyze why you smoke e.g. for me social and nerves and replace it with positive things, like when I quit last time, it was the idea of keeping too busy during the times I wanted to smoke and also avoid being around it as much as possible and once you have quit you won't be able to tolerate second hand smoke and good luck to both of us as I have used double patches and methobromate for cigarette cessation but believe it is a mental state where you have to strive hard to replace bad habits with good ones.

Yes it is possible but not really advisable. As already pointed out the best way to quit is will power.

I am a codeine addict prescribed by my GP. I made the choice to come off the drug and I did it all on my own as my doc told me to swap Codeine for paracetamol I knew this was wrong as that could damage my liver too.

It was very hard I couldn't do anything but all the time I knew I was doing the right thing I kept going.

I have know been off codeine for over a year a feel alot better for it.

good luck.
