Going For MRI Tomorrow and Sacred?!

Question: I am going for an MRI of my jaw to evaluate my TMJ problem. Totally scared about having this done and told no sedation because I will be asked to do things with my jaw.

Not sure what to expect and have to wait till late afternoon for the procedure.

An MRI machine is like the tunnels that kids play in at Burger King. It sounds like a whole hurd of kids are on the out side playing with power tools and hammers. You are not closed into the machine. Once you lay down they will either place a helmet type thing down over your head or place two coil type things on each tmj area depends on the brand of the machine. There maybe an injection in the arm IV, some places use contrast some don't. My hosital does. My routine takes about one hour and involves doing scan with your mouth closed and some with it open. You will problably find that if feels like forever since there is not much to do in the machine since movement is the enemy. The noise from the machine is all the magnets and radiofrequency generators turning off and on. Just like a electric razor makes noise when its working so does a MRI machine, but it is a lot bigger. You will get earplugs or music to protect your hearing again depends on the machine.

Things to make your scan go faster and easier:
Don't move! Even small moves like looking around can cause repeats scans and at 2-4 minutes a scan you do not want repeats. This also applies to hands and feet while the scan is running.

Don't wear metal including jewelry; leave earrings necklaces and watches at home.

Don't have any metal in your hair such as bobby pins or elastic bands with the little metal connector.

Do take your favorite pain relever as you will be require to keep you mouth wide open for several minutes, makes my jaw kind of sore.

Do make sure and bring a complete list of medications as most places will be asking for them. You will do a questionaire asking about surgerys and implants just to make sure the exam is same. Most internal implants are safe but some like pacemakers are not.

Do ask for something over your eyes if you have a tendency to not like closed places. You will be in at most 2.5 feet, but some people get nervous when they have to stare at the top of the machine the whole time. I have been in the machine lots of times and don't personally have any problem but the wash clothe helps to relax.

Do go with a positive additude and relax nothing bad is going to happen to you and they may just find a way to make you feel better when the get the results.

there is nothing bad or painful about an mri.it usually does not take more than 20 minutes to do the test.good luck to you.

all i can say is mentally, try your self. MRI's don't hurt.. you can be clausterphobic.. and that can affect you..

Easy as pie. The machine itself looks intimidating because of it's size. All your gonna do is lie down and stay still. You'll hear an ANNOYING knocking noise but they give you ear plugs for that!! You will be fine really. It's sounds so scarey..but it's not. When it's all done..you think how silly it was to be so afraid. You will be just fine!! Pinkey swear!!

O there is NOTHING to be worried about. It happens so fast and there is NO pain at all. Nothing will be touching you. Only problem I've seen with patients are those who are claustophobic!! And if you are, they will talk you through it. Good Luck! Keep up updated!

An MRI is a fancy Xray in a tube machine...no pain, no hurt, no problem...you are really gonna laught at yourself when it's all over! Good Luck.
