My boyfriend's dad refuses to let him go to the doctor- what are his options!

Question: He is a college student, but his dad pays for his health insurance. He recently got a huge infection in his foot, and his dad has told him to cut his foot open to let it heal. His dad even cut it open himself! My boyfriend keeps begging his dad to let him have his health insurance card so he can go to the doctor, but his dad refuses. His dad says it's only for emergencies... His dad makes $70,000 a year, but he believes that going to the doctor is for wussies, and it is against his family's beliefs to go to the doctor unless you are dieing (his dad was in a motorcycle wreck, broke his knee and the bone was sticking out, and refused medical care).

Can my boyfriend go to the doctor without his health insurance card? I'm terrified his infection will get so bad he'll lose his foot; he is in so much pain. What can he do at this point? Thank you for your help!

Tell your boyfriend to go to the ER, now. You are right, he could lose his foot. If you have a state hospital-run ER, they are used to dealing with people without insurance. Someone needs to talk to your boyfriend's father. He thinking is not healthy and could cause the death of his son if your boyfriend does not get help soon.

Anyone can go to the emergency room for treatment because it is an emergency.
After treatment he might be charged a bill and he is legally bound to pay it, but if his foot is not worth his money then he has free will to let it fall off to please his Dad. His father's money should not be his ruler.

He needs to set his priorities. Staying alive and having his dad mad at him is better than getting gangrene or worse. Go to the ER ASAP.

oh my gosh does this stuff actually happen. Send your boyfriend to the ER room now. He not only could lose a foot but an infection like that he could lose his life. His father must not be too bright to make that kind of money and neglet getting his child medical help.
