What causes that needle-like feeling when a part of your body fall asleep?!

Question: Under normal conditions, when pressure is exerted on a body part (leg, arm, etc) arteries become compressed, making them unable to provide the tissues and nerves with the oxygen and glucose they need to function properly. Nerve pathways can also become blocked, preventing normal transmission of electrochemical impulses to the brain. Some of the nerves will stop firing while other start firing hyperactively. These signals are then sent to the brain where they are interpreted as burnng, tingling, prickling feelings. It is these senstations (paresthesias) that alert you to move the body part. Shaking the body part will release the pressure and allow nutrient-rich blood to flow back into the area and nerve cells start firing more regularly. The "pins and needles" feeling can intensify until the nerve cells recover which is why it feels painful when you try to 'wake up' your sleeping body part.

Persistent numbness or tingling can be a sign of some medical conditions, but in most cases it is a perfectly normal reaction.
