Cortisone shot vs surgery on a bone sticking up?!

Question: I have a bone kind of sticking up in my wrist on the top, right in the middle. it's affecting me alot. the first doctor i went to said surgery was my best bet. then my trainer (i play basketball in college) had me go to another guy who suggested a cortisone shot first before thinking of surgery.

i dont want to wait a month for it to determine if my pain is better, THEN do the surgery. there is no garuntee the shot will actually work.

the only problem with the surgery is "blah blah its scary for me if you go under anesthesia, and surgery is bad for you blah blah" that people have told me.

if anyone has more insight on what i should do? if i do surgery, they will grind the bone down so it's not sticking up - permenant fix rather than possible temporary with the surgery.

Taking a Cortisone Shot before any surgery is just prolonging the inevitable. Are they sure it is a bone, because right in the middle is more cartilage and muscle than bone. You may just have a hard cyst, which just needs drained. I would get another opinion. Did they take an x-ray? If not, I would insist on one. If it turns out that it is a bone spur, then get it ground down. I would ask for an IV Sedative instead of Penathol to knock you clear out. IV Sedative is medicine to put you to sleep in the IV and they can wake you right after the surgery. Penathol should only be used for a surgery that is going to take a long time, like say for a knee replacement. The surgery you need should only take ten to fifteen minutes. They can do it microscopically, or at least I would insist on it. In the meantime, I would think warm moist heat should help with the pain and maybe a 600 mg of Motrin. Just take a cloth, soak it with hot water, ring it out, then apply the cloth to the pain area. You can do this several times a day. Best of luck to you sir whichever and whatever you have done.

Cortisone shots are never a permanent fix for anything except bone spurs. Believe me I have been there. I would say have the surgery and get it over with.
