Smashed thumbnail--is it broken?!


Question: 6 days ago I smashd my thumbnail in my car door. It immediately filled with datrk blood under the naikl, swelled a little and hurt like you wouldn't believe. I oculdn't sleep the night I smahsed it for the pain so I had it drilled. It did feel better asfter tha, but it is still quite stiff up to the knuckle and feels like there is pressure on it. It also still hurts but not nearly so bad.

Any suggestions on what this might mean? I'm trying to avoid any unneccesary docytor visits.

well you did smash it in a door so the pressure and swelling maybe caused by that, also depending on how hard you might have hit it you coulda just damaged a nerve under the nail and just needs some healing and yes most likely its gonna fall off "the finger nail" if it were broke youd feel a nice warm fuzzy feeling..ive had two boxers fractures and a severed pinky" i know all about the warm fuzzy feeling, the dark blood is normal it would have eventualy soaked back in your skin,,you should be fine unless you cant bend the tip of your finger

    • it could be broken- wait a couple more days and see what happens. If it doesn't get any better, it probably is broken so go see a doctor. If you don't, your thumb can be abnormal for the rest of your life.

    Meanwhile, secure your thumb with a supporter. Or, try to tape it to keep it from moving. That is the key to healing things.

    This sounds exactly like what happened to me, but it was with my toe instead, and I had it smashed into a cement stair step. It turned out, my toe was broken, but the doctor really couldn't do much for it. I just had to keep it splinted. Your fingernail may fall off, the skin around the fingernail will start feeling "loose", and it'll get "stretchy". You may want to drain your fingernail, you can do so by heating a paper clip until the tip is red hot, and placing it over the nail, but not putting pressure. It should burn through the nail without hurting, and the blood will then drain out. But this isn't recommended unless you're in bad pain, and it'd be safer going to the doctor's.

    Anyway, I hope you turn out okay. I would wait a couple of days before going to the doctor's. Just make sure you keep your finger iced and taped/splinted. Good luck, and hope your finger gets better soon!
