Pain medicine... HELP?!

Question: i reinjured my knee pretty badly on March 17th. The ortho that i was seeing locally thought that it would be best if i saw a specialist. I went to the specialist on Monday and i have to go to PT for 3 wks and then i am most likly having surgery after...

I ment to ask the DR for either a refil on my pain meds or for something else cause what i have(darvocet) isnt really working once the pain reaches a 6 or 7 or higher(which is after i am up an on it, with or without my crutches) and i only have like 4 left anyway... i completely forgot to ask him about the medicine but figured that i would be able get the refil when i got back home... I called the ortho office to see about a refil and they said that since i was refered to the specialist the HE was the only one that could get my the script... problem is that he is in Baltimore and i live 2.5 hrs away

would i be able to call the office and get a script faxed to the pharmacy where i live or do i have to wait until i go back in 3 wks?

Darvocet is a schedule 4 drug, and so, it can be called/faxed into your pharmacy.

Ok, it's time for tough love. You said your pain reaches a "6 or 7 or higher." Is this on a scale from 1-10, 10 being the most pain you can experience? Because a knee injury is hardly a 6 on the most painful things that could happen to you. If you keep taking opiate painkillers, you will develop an addiction. That is the very reason your doctor only gave you that amount of darvocet. Sometimes you just need to deal with it when you have pain. Take an anti-inflammatory and whatever other medications you are supposed to be taking, and lay off the opiates.

I understand that your knee hurts. I'm not suggesting that it doesn't hurt. I constantly injure my knees in what I do, and I know other people who have torn ligaments and other really unpleasant injuries. You just can't go doping yourself up whenever you get injured. It's dangerous. And just because you have a prescription for it doesn't make it less so.

chances are, they can't call in the script because it is a narcotic,,,but the doctor might mail it to you,,good luck

Absolutely, they can call in or fax in something for you. But, last girl is right. My whole life is based on pain control-be careful. Don't let the pain control.

We have no way to know what your physicians office policys are so you'll need to call them. It's not a triplicate so he may be willing to phone or fax a refill in. This isn't unusual. A reputable doctor won't prescribe narcotics if they know you're seeing another doctor who is prescribing for you.
Warning: he may be trying to keep you on a minimum of pain meds right now so that you won't have a tolerance to them for post surgical care. The day after surgery you're going to be thinking "I thought that was a 6?that makes this a 25 on a scale of 10" .
I understand that you hurt and it doesn't matter if someone else is in more pain. That person may have more pain but that's not YOUR pain, this is. If the worst pain you have ever encountered is a hang nail, that pain may seem unbearable to you because you have nothing to compare it to. I'm not trying to make you feel like a wimp but I want you to understand that you'll need all the help you can get from your meds after surgery. There's a reason if they don't want to give you anything stronger right now or why they may not write a refill script.
Good luck.

THE ONLY DRUGS THAT CAN BE CALLED OR FAXED ARE SCEDULE#3(VICODIN,LORTAB,LORCET,NORCO,ET... #4 (DARVOCET,TALACEN,TALWIN)
