In a perfect world the best counselor would be educated in the pharmacology of drugs, additionally having recovery experience themselves. Not the first time I've realized we do not live in a perfect world though.
If you are interested in this because you're undergoing treatment I would suggest you try to find a different counselor if you have no faith in this one. As an alternative see this one for what they have to offer, the administration of the drug and get involved in an AA type program where you'll encounter people who you can relate to more.
I know how you feel. Until I was prescribed oxycontin for about 5 years and then had to get off of it I didn't really understand why addicts are addicts. I now have the utmost respect for recovering heroine addicts. I would never have believed what a person has to go through without the small taste that I had.
