try abreva, you can follow that up with some anti-bacterial with pain reliever... allow a few minutes or so in between. then I would take a look at some otc things like choraphor. Results vary as with all things even prescription. good luck... a lot of people have also had good results with cottage cheese with flax seed oil ( very high in good nutrition ). I personally would not but you might want to look at famvir acyclovir and zovirax from the docs
Ice may help. just hold a cube on it. The numbing may help reduce the pain - just a suggestion!

There's nothing better than mentholatum for this kind of thing. Trust me on this! It also helps it to heal faster.
