Unfortunately healing is a much slower process than the mechanism of injury. Certain ways to mask pain are to take NSAIDS (advil) to releive inflammation that causes pain and to numb pain via menthol creams (ben gay). The problem with this is that though the NSAIDS do help heal the injury, masking the pain by taking large doses of them along with using menthol creams is that there is a seriously high chance of tearing your muscles. The quads/hammies are the strongest muscles on your body and you must have had a fairly serious injury to have pulled it significantly and as I'm sure your Dr said, RICE and Anti-inflammatories are the way to go, sorry.

There is no proven way to accelerate the body's natural healing process...you can only prevent it from taking longer. RICE for the first 48 hours, then resume stretching and use of heat application.

Actually, in theory, anti-inflammatories actually delay the healing process because the inflammatory response is what makes us heal. ...taking anti-inflammatories will just make it more bearable.
