Normally heartburn caused by excessive acid produced in stomach. This is caused by acid reflux decease. Many Americans are suffering from this kind. The main cause is how you are living and your life style.

If you are not watching your diet, regular walking or excercise, enough drinking of daily water ( 6 -8 glass), regular and enough sleep ( 6 - 8 hours/daily), not too much drink - wine/wisky etc. and not many late night and irregular habbits.
Avoid spicy and oily foods including too much of chocolate and citric acid containts foods including ariated drinks such as Cola / Pepsi and others in too much quantity.

Also it is heridietary in many cases and inborn in some. The main valve which joint your stomach and isofagus has become weak and does not stop stomach acid from coming upword and entering isofagus tube which is food pipe. When it comes into food pipe it irretates and damage lining and you feed burning sensation.

You should not neglect such thing and immediately get it checked through your primary family physician. They will take X-ray and berrium meal test and in sever condition endoscopy by specialist to rule out much damage. There are medicine to cure this decease - such as Zantac, Prelosec and Nexium. But follow only the doctor's advice.

You will be fine. But you will need to modify your life style if you have to live happily. Good luck !

It could be gas. Gas pains are very sharp and painful. If you notice it is more painful after eating fatty or spicy foods it could be indigestion.

It could also be a stomach ulcer or gallstone pains. If the pain continues to be bothersome, you should really go see your doctor.
