Does this swelling sound like swelling from a meniscus tear??!

Question: i read somewhere that if you have a meniscal tear that the swelling may be between the shin bone and thigh bone.

my swelling is like a line right smack dab in the middle of my knee. before my work-out group, the swelling was like this. after the group, it was all over my knee. now it is slowly going back to the center of my knee.

so, is this caused by a meniscal tear?

my other symptoms are:
knee locking (has locked up once)
knee catching (like it is moving in weird ways and sticking)
knee swelling
knee pain
knee stiffness
knee tightness
knee pain when straightening the knee
knee pain when going up/down stairs
and this morning, when i straightened my knee, it felt like a little piece of something was moving around inside my knee
oh, and it buckles/gives away sometimes

so, is the swelling like that of a meniscus tear? and are these symptoms like torn meniscus symptoms?

i thank you in advance!

so is this swelling coused by a

i actually have experienced the exact same symptoms and ohh man, the problems i have endured as a result have been such a headache for me. i have had knee problems since the beginning of time and i never knew why. i later found out that that i had a j-shaped derangement that caused both of my patellas to be slightly misaligned by a few teeeeny tiny milimeters of a degree. nothing visable by any means so i never noticed it. i just kept having dislocations, ligament tears, swelling, moving cartilage, etc.....especially when i worked hard at the gym, but like you, i just thought it was from weakness, not stretching properly, or just working too hard. there is no surgery to correct my problem because it cant be guaranteed that i would be able to walk again so umm....thanks, but no thanks. im fine. i can work out, bike ride, jog, etc and yea, sometimes, it locks and i have to massage it and bend/straighten it to unlock it....but i cant jump, cant run, cant dance competitively, cant ski, cant bolt down stairs, and i ALWAYS have to watch that the floor beneath me isnt slippery, etc. im OK with that, im smart about it and i know my limits. from what you said, i am pretty certain you have a slight tear (tiny, tiny one bc you're still fairly mobile at most times) in either your meniscus or more possibly, your left medial collateral ligament. the latter especially would definitely explain knee locking, knee catching, pain when straightening, fluid/cartilage movement (i actually have to bend, and straighten my knee or press lightly at an angle to "push the stuff back in" & make sure it doesnt bother me because i havent had it drained in a while). only an MRI can for sure answer this, but if i were you, i would REQUEST and INSIST on having an MRI on both knees. yea, you'll be there for 2 hours stuck in the same position while they do it, but its worth it to know. depending on the severity of the tear, they may not even opperate. they may just drain it, give you tylenol III, and recommend rehabilitation. no matter what though, dont worry. it's a common problem and is totally something you can work on and strengthen. if arthroscopic surgery can make it more comfortable, then do it. i wish you all of the best! can you please email me after you see an orthopedic surgeon (this is the ONLY type of physician who can diagnose it), i too, would like to know what it is and what their going to do to fix it. <3 <3

that does indeed sound like a torn meniscus. I think you need to go to the doctor, you'll probably need an MRI and possibly surgery to fix that sucker. Good luck!
