I want to start running again, but I have bad knees & ankles. What should I do?!


Question: I want to start running again, but I have bad knees & ankles!. What should I do!?
I have had bad knees and ankles since junior high!. I am now in college and want to start working out more!. Specifically, I want to start running again!. I've been running/jogging a mile about once a week, but my ankle gives out on me about half-way through (I usually power walk after that)!. I wear an ankle brace and a knee brace while running, and make sure to watch that I'm not running inappropriately!. Is there maybe a certain kind of shoe I should be looking for!? Any other suggestions!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

I suggest Asics for shoes!. I run 4 or 5 days a week and they are the only shoes that I like and they also last longer than the average shoe!. Also, I just got this thing that goes under your knee called a "knee strap" they have them at Dick's Sporting Goods and it goes right under your knee cap to give you extra support!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I have the same problem!. What I do is wear the braces you can buy at an athletic store or even CVS!. They help a lot!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

YOU NEED TO TALK ABOUT THIS WITH YOUR DOCTOR!!

Nothing said on a forum such as this can be taken as 'good advice' because no one knows WHAT IS WRONG with your knees and ankles and what works for one person might kill you!

BUT

Keeping in mind that you need to discuss this with a physical therapist!.!.!.

START SLOW!.

You can't run before you know how to walk!.!.!.

Start on a tredmill or a stair stepper if possible and work your way up from a slow walk to a fast walk to a jog to a run!.

Get the proper shoes for the intensity of your work out!.!.!.

It might cost some $ but the proper shoes and braces make all the difference!. Don't use running shoes to walk and vice versa!.

IF IT HURTS THEN STOP!!!

Your body is saying "DAMNIT! This is causing Injury stupid! STOP!"

Throwing your joint out is just going to make your recovery to full speed take 10X longer then if you just start slow and work your way up!

You wouldn't try to life 100pounds the first time you use the barbell's right!? So why would you try to run when it hurts to speed walk!?!?

SLOW AND STEADY is the way to build up the musciles around your joints!.

PLEASE, for the love of little apples, go and talk to a sports theripist before you try to do ANY type of exercise on hurt joints!.

Joints are the hardest things to heal in the human body!.!.!.

Jack them up NOW and you will be getting new knees and hips by your 40's!.!.!. And ankles!? There isn't really much they can do to fix them so you would be screwed and in pain all the time!
