Substitute for Metacam?!

Question: Substitute for Metacam!?
Hi,My dog is 17ys old & weighs 10kg and is full of life when shes not in pain!.I have been taking her back & fore to the vets for pressure on the spinal cord may be caused by a slipped disk!.Metacam has worked great for the pain but gives her a terrible cough!.The vet has tried a steroid injection but it only lasted 3days and then tried a different anti inflamatory via injection but this made her sick!. he has also given me omeprozole(human from) I have been to the vet 3time in 1week and have had to pay a consultation fee each time, which is crippling me!. Can anybody suggest an alternitive to Metacam !? or do I ask for Metacam back despite the cough it gives because she's out of pain!.
Please help!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
I would make sure the cough is not something else in a 17 year old dog!.
Alternatives to Metacam
Rimadyl
Dermaxx
Previcox
Zubrin
Tramadol
Tramadol is the least expensive but it is not in the same class of drug as Metacam!.
I would request a recheck (not as expensive as an office fee) and possibly do radiographs to check out the cause of the cough!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Sounds like the Metacam is doing a lot more good than harm, so keep her on it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Ask if he has some kind of steroid pill your puppy can take, this might help if the injections helped - and if it were in pill form you would be able to give her one everyday!.

My dog had Lyme disease and that's what they gave me to treat her, of course I'm not really sure the long term effects!.

Maybe he could just give her something to treat the cough and she could continue to Metacam!.

You can use certain NSAIDS like us humans take - like ibuprofen, aspirin!. I'm not sure which is safe for puppies though!. My dad gives his little poodle aspirin everyday and it has seemed to helped him!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

As well as using Metacam you could maybe ask if your vet supports alternative therapies,

My golden retriever has arthritis and is on metacam, the vet also back this up with acupuncture and with swimming too, the holistic approach certainly assists him and to this day he is still going strong - saying that now though I do incorporate reiki into his regime, but whilst he is comfy and happy then I'm happy!.

The moment he stops being comfy then that's the time to let him go!.

He is now 15 years old and is a fantastic dog!Www@Answer-Health@Com
