Answers:
I have chronic migraines, and it's a common misconception that you go to the hospital only for pain management!. Mine can last a week or more, and as another person said, you get to the point where you are severely dehydrated due to being unable to eat or drink!. This can be avoided by having prescription nausea medicine at home!. Another reason to go is if you just can't get rid of it on your own!. Some migraine medicines can only be administered in a hospital under care of a doctor!. These are not pain-killers (although you may get that as well), but anti-seizure medications or injections of medicines such as Imitrex, which actually stop the swelling and changes in brain chemistry that cause the migraine!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Migrane headaches are a type of headache that is so severe that a person is unable to function!. Although different people have different conditions, what I've heard is that all they can so for you at the ER is provide pain relief!. Serious pain relief!. Hopefully the patient falls asleep and wakes up without the pounding pain!.

The following passage is from
Signs and symptoms from the Mayo Clinic website:

A typical migraine attack produces some or all of these signs and symptoms:

Moderate to severe pain, which may be confined to one side of the head or may affect both sides
Head pain with a pulsating or throbbing quality
Pain that worsens with physical activity
Pain that interferes with your regular activities
Nausea with or without vomiting
Sensitivity to light and sound
When left untreated, a migraine typically lasts from four to 72 hours, but the frequency with which headaches occur varies from person to person!. You may have migraines several times a month or just once or twice a year!.

Not all migraines are the same!. Most people experience migraines without auras, which were previously called common migraines!. Some, however, have migraines with auras, which were previously called classic migraines!. If you're in the second group, you'll likely have an aura about 15 to 30 minutes before your headache begins!. Auras may continue after your headache starts or even occur after your headache begins!. When you're experiencing an aura, you may:

See sparkling flashes of light
Perceive dazzling zigzag lines in your field of vision
Experience slowly spreading blind spots in your vision
Feel tingling, pins and needles sensations in one arm or leg
Rarely, experience weakness or language and speech problems
Whether or not you have auras, you may have one or more sensations of premonition (prodrome) several hours or a day or so before your headache actually strikes, including:

Feelings of elation or intense energy
Cravings for sweets
Thirst
Drowsiness
Irritability or depressionWww@Answer-Health@Com

Pain management, because chronic migraine can make you feel suicidal because you start to believe you would do anything to make them stop!.
Some migraines make you so sick you vomit until you are literally dehydrated so for the really bad ones, pain management and suppositories to settle your stomach!.
If you get the puking headaches and don't do anything about them you can get seriously dehydrated and need to be hydrated intravenously!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Both myself and my 12 year old son suffer from migraines!. Both visual and the typical painful one!.

I have had to call an ambulance for my son it was that severe to take him to hospital!.
i know of a sufferer, a fellow Nurse, who spent just over a month in hospital trying to find a treatment and relief that worked for her!.

A migraine pain is like someone is drilling into your brain!.
Think of a Brain Freeze from drining something ice cold!. Times that by 1,000!. Then that pain comes close!.
It causes nausea and/or vomiting!. Photophobia, or intense pain when there is any form of light!. Loss of sensation in body parts at times!. And inability to function in any way in all cases!.

The visual migraine is caused by the eyes 'seeing' lights or flashes in front of thje eyes that disturb the vision!.

Migraines need to be treated at hospital if the pain is severe and not controlled!. You can not function any more with everyday activities!. They make you very sick!. Don't stop after a day!. The migraine is different!. Etc!.
All sufferers know when it is time to the ER!.
Everyone's experience of a migraine is different but the pain is always severe and crippling!.

My son now takes Catapres, a BP medication, every night to get some relief!. It works wonderfully and has brought his migraines from around 4 or 5 a week to around 1 a week!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

With a migraine the pain can get very severe!. You become sensitive to light and sound and can even become nauseous!. If the pain gets severe enough, and it doesn't take much, go to the er!. They can give a shot of some killer pain killer and phenergan (for the nausea)!. You are sent home you sleep like a baby and when you wake up the migraine is gone!. Although do be cautious of a hangover headache afterwards but Tylenol will take care of that!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

There are two major reasons you might go to the emergency department when you have a migraine!.

The most common is if the migraine is too bad, you might want something for pain or nausea- maybe an injection or something!.

The other reason is if you have one-sided paralysis or numbness, you might be concerned that something is going wrong in your brain (for example, a stroke)!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Halloween 06 I was taken to the emergency room for a migraine that wouldn't let up!. At that time they ruled it cluster headaches but my neurologist said no it was a really bad migraine!.
That night prior to my hospital visit I was walking my kids around and I sat on a curb!. The pain was intense!. I couldn't get up!. Luckily I was in an area where it was common to trick or treat so there were fire fighters and EMTs there to help!. I don't remember much except telling them please don't let me fall off the stretcher!.
I was given a bunch of Demerol !. They did a CT scan to rule out anything life threatening!. I was released with a headache 7 hours later!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

If migraines are something thats recurring in some people, they tend to go to the hospital to see a neurologist because severe and constant migraines can be a sign of brain tumors or blood clotting in the brain, and in these cases people need to go in for an MRI and CAT Scans in order to see what the problem is for the constant migraines!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

migraines feel like your head is pounding or going to explode!. If they are constant you can get tired and frustrated and sometimes it may hurt so bad you may need medical attention!.

imagine an infection on your foot!. When it's starts getting so bad that it crawls up your leg and hits your waist!.!.!.well it's about time for medical attention!. same with a migraine; they can keep getting worse!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

you would definately know!. I've had to go before!. It just hit suddenly and I began vomiting and seeing spots, and I felt like my head was in a vice being squeezed!. The pain was unbearable, so I knew if someone didn't give me something to ease the pain, I was going to loose it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
