A few weeks ago at work a client started choking!. I gave him the heimlich and the mint came up but he lost consciousness and i had to give him cpr!. he started breathing again quickly and it's all fine but it's been playing on my mind!. ok wel!.!.!.the resuscitation guidelines now state that you should do 30 compressions before your 2 rescue breaths!. This is because the body will stil have a fairly high oxygen level-and wil have air in the lungs so the priority is to make sure that oxygen is pumped around the body to keep the brain functioning and other major organs!.

the likelihood is that when you compress the chest, the air trapped in the lungs will be compressed up the trachea!.

after 30 times of this happening, the object obstructing the air way is likely to remove itself!

therefore, when you get round to doing the breaths the airway will be clear!.

you need to bear in mind tho that not every case is text book!.!.but this is all you could do in the situation!.

it sounds like you have been thinking a lot about it, there is nothing more you could have done i promise--u did a great job!. i suggest you talk about it with a first aid trained college or ur boss as this will let you get it off ur chest!.

I am only 17, i have seen a lot of horrific injuries in the last 5 years because i am a member of st john ambulance!. i lost my first casualty when i was 15 yrs old!.!.!. i was very shaken up as you may imagine!.!.!.especially as it was on my own at the time!. I talked to one of my seniors about it and felt much better!. they assured me that i had done all i could and everything as per my training!. like i said before!.!.not everything is textbook!.

r u 1st aid trained---a 1st aid course or a refresher course if ur already trained may give you a bit more confidence---the more you do these things, the better you will be able to cope with the situations!.

i hope this has helped!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Look up CPR on line--choking in an unconscious victim!. Basically, you lay them on their back and you do a similar movement to the Heimlich--its abdominal thrusts, but the theory is the same--the pictures will just tell you where to put your hands!. But yes, no airway = death, unless paramedics get there in time--they sometimes are able to retrieve the blockage with alligator forcepts!.
You are to be totally commended for your selfless act--very very good job (my husband & I did the heimlich once at a gallery opening--broke a lot of ribs but also saved a life--feels good)Www@Answer-Health@Com

In all the cases that I have seen, a person always does the same thing, the hands go to the throat and they start to turn blue which gives you the hint that there is no air getting in the system, you have to clear the airway first, its a scary thing when it happens, but you always check the airway first!. If you come upon a person laying down, turn them over and check the airway, if you are getting nothing, turn them over and give them a sharp blow between the shoulders to dislodge what ever is causing the blockage!. If they have been laying there for a while still try untill untill help arrives!. Some times there is nothing that you can do and they do die!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
