Allergic to Fentynal?!

Question: Allergic to Fentynal!?
Turns out I'm allergic to Fentynal!. Before being put on the Fentynal patch I was not on any narcotic pan medication!. What do you think they will try me on now that I can't take Fentynal!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
First, Ultram is a narcotic pain medication, though many people (including many health care providers) think it is not!. It is a synthetic opiate, and is in the same family group as MS or fentanyl!.

Contrary to Diane's statement MS is not available in patch form!. Fentanyl is the narcotic pain medication in patch form!.

You did not describe what "allergy" you had to fentanyl!. Was it a reaction to the patch, or an actual allergy to opiates!?

Hypersensitivity to opiates is relatively rare, though many people have significant side effects to this class of drugs, and the Duragesic patch frequently causes skin reactions!. However, there are methods for decreasing the skin reaction!.

In patients who need long acting pain medications but are unable to use the Duragesic patch other long acting opiates are usually tried, unless a true opiate hypersensitivity is present!.

You might be able to use a synthetic opiate, such as methadone for pain control if you have no issues with Ultram!.

You need to be followed by a pain specialist, possibly after testing by an allergist!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It could be that you are allergic to the patch or some of the additives; do you know if its the fentanyl itself!? They will have to test you for other narcs; only MS comes in a patch!. Perhaps a non-narcotic pain reliever!. Are you under the care of a pain specialist!? That would be the person with the greatest knowledge base for your issue!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
