Is there any way to change how a person sleeps through the night?!

Question: Is there any way to change how a person sleeps through the night!?
I'm a fairly light sleeper!. While I'm home alone I don't have any problems whatsoever, however usually my mother is home at night as well!. She gets up much earlier than I do for her job and it wakes me up every night, interrupting my REM cycle!. It never fails, no matter how tired I am or how late I've stayed up, the noise she makes while she's getting ready wakes me up around 6 AM
I've asked her before to try to be quieter in the mornings but she just doesn't seem to be able to or she's just ignoring my request!. There are even mornings when she will stand outside my bedroom door and talk on her cellphone!. It drives me crazy!. I can usually fall asleep once she leaves but I rarely ever wake up feeling rested!. Is there anyway I can train myself to sleep through her morning routine!? I've tried sleeping pills on occassion and while they usually do work, I'd rather not use them!. I need to get a full nights rest but I just can't afford an apartment yet!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Man this is a toughy!. Quality sleep is extremely important!. Also breaking the REM cycle directly is not good, thats why we should never use an alarm clock, and wake naturally!. Believe it or not you can train yourself to sleep!. I would bet a persons body clock is as accurate as a Timex!.

Anyway, there are no real good answers here!. Sleep is a problem for millions!. The fact that you can go back to sleep is a real good sign!. Almost every OTC sleep aid is Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) yes including ALL those PM sleep aids!. Benadryl is safe and effective for making people drowsy!. If you do use some, save yourself some money and just go to the dollar store and buy a generic antihistamine!. Check the label against a PM product, you will see they are both Diphenhydramine!.

However, I dont think thats your answer, because Diphenhydramine is real good at making you drowsy, but not so good at keeping you asleep all night!. Maybe they have time release version out there!. Just a thought!.

Other sleep aids, are usually by perscription only!. I dont know much about these new sleep aids like Ambien, but I have heard in some cases, they can make people do bizarre things!. You talk to your doctor VERY carefully about possible side effects!. DONT let him rush you out of there!.

Another thing is benzodiazepine, mostly know as valium, there are many drugs in the benzodiazepine family (klonopin, xanax, ativan)!. This is by persciption only, and will be extremely hard to get (for your condition) because it has been so widely abused for so long!. Also benzodiazepine is usually only given to people who have chronic severe insomnia!. Given that you can fall back to sleep, this is not really a good choice for you!. (its also habit forming)

If you really want to 'sleep train' yourself, you are going to have to have some help doing it!. You would need to setup a control test!. Make charts and graphs on things like, at what time of the night will a noise wake you up, how loud was it, what type of noise was it!. Write things down so you dont forget them, and you can compare data later!. Keep a pen/pad beside your bed to write things down!. But I doubt you will be able to retrain your sleep without an assistant!.

If all else fails (or this might be easier) try some serious soundproofing!. Back in my band days, we used to hang layer after layer of old quilts, and blankets on the walls so the neighbors didnt complain!. Also empty egg cartons are excellent soundproofing, but you must make row, after row, and cover an entire wall!. You could also professionally soundproof, but this will be a good bit expensive!.

Lastly, I would have a 'sit down' with mom!. Dont just ask her to be a little more quiet!. Tell her we need to sit down and talk, make it seem important, because it is!. Then try to convey that this is a serious issue!. It may be that she doesnt understand the importance of it!. Like you said "but she just doesn't seem to be able to or she's just ignoring my request" Dont let the lines of communication break down!. I bet your mom will even have some ideas that will help!.
